Personal note
from Shawn
Dear,
This afternoon I received a thank-you note
from Barack and Michelle Obama. You may have received one as
well. I'm sure many people did. Part of the note
read:
"...This is our time...to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that
fundamental truth...that out of many, we are one; that while we
breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and
those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless
creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can."
Yes We Can. That thought thrills me. The
realization that my president-elect wants me, us, to believe
that, to stand in it, to live it, thrills me even
more. If we do live this, what can we create/develop/help
happen?
What is it that you want for yourself, for your family, your community,
country, world? What do you hope for? My hope is
that we all become clearer about what we want, we recognize that we
can, and we strive to make those dreams and hopes a reality.
I wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving and a very blessed
holiday season,
Shawn
Finding
Your Own Road
Being
yourself takes courage. It's a feat of courage to be honest
about who you are, how you feel, how you see the world. On
the other hand, fitting in comes at a cost. It can be painful
trying to fit in...the square peg doesn't fit into the round hole
without its corners being trimmed.
Last weekend I watched the movie Juno, about
a teenager who becomes pregnant. She's one of those square
pegs who doesn't feel the need to be trimmed. The character
is quirky and refreshing. It dawned on me that she was given
a lot of freedom to be who she is. How would life be
different for you if you'd been given the freedom to be yourself?
How would you like to have been guided to be yourself?
Like the book "All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten" by
Robert Fulghum, what are some of the things you wish you'd learned
earlier, or that you could really benefit from incorporating
into your
life now?
There are a number of things I wish someone had told me,
things I wish I'd truly "gotten" way back then. Things that
I'd love to have "in my bones" now.
Things I Wish I'd Known Earlier
- Being weird is OK - believe it or not,
everybody has their own quirks. EVERYBODY.
- Learn to appreciate some of your quirks;
learn to love yourself, there's always plenty to love.
- Question some of the "rules" you live
by: these shoulds and can'ts and have to's are pretty
limiting - and probably aren't truly absolute "rules" (see "The
Work"
by
Byron Katie).
- An obstacle is not a sign you should quit
- or even that you have to start from scratch.
- Your path might not look like anyone
else's. Don't try too hard to fit in.
What are some of the things you wish you'd known, truly known,
at an earlier age? If you'd known them, how would your life be
different? Would finding your own road, and traveling along
that road be easier? Here's to learning to trust ourselves enough to
walk down our own roads with more confidence and joy!
What's that you
say? I love to hear from you, and I read every email
personally, even when I can't reply to all of them. Send your thoughts
