Personal note from Shawn

FlowersHello,

Happy September! The month of September has always been a big deal for me...birthdays galore! My birthday, my son's, my father's, my niece's, and my grandmother's all fall within the same week. So there's quite a bit of celebrating - more subdued nowadays, but celebrating nonetheless. It's also a month of reflection for me in particular...taking stock of where I am and where my deep heart wants to be. Sometimes, like this year, I find myself in a bit of a "rough patch" - knowing I've gotten somewhat off course and not liking it much; remembering God is the Potter and I am the clay, but complaining a bit about being squeezed. (You'll see where this fits in Step 2 in today's article!) I'm always grateful to remember that even during the rough patches, there's a possibility of tapping in to deep love, joy, and gratitude.

Sending you blessings of joy,

Shawn

Recipe for HappinessFlowers

Happiness takes work. Sounds strange, doesn't it? Brief glimpses of being happy may just "happen," but living a life of happiness takes more thought, intention, and, frankly, work. I've been a student of personal development since my early twenties...over half my life! One of the early tape series I purchased was by Brian Tracy, one of the leaders in the area of personal and professional success. He's written and produced a number of valuable books and audios, and periodically I check in with what he's up to. In a recent article, he wrote about the secrets of lifelong happiness. A couple of his questions can be useful in gaining clarity about your unique ingredients for achieving happiness. We may not think too much about it, but we all have different ideas about what will make us happy. Giving yourself the chance to explore what's involved in your particular description of happiness can be quite enlightening - and joyful!

What's In Your Happiness Recipe?
Take some time to think about and write your answers to the following questions:

1. What would it take for me to be perfectly happy?

Write down everything you can imagine would be in your life if you were perfectly happy at this very moment. Include things such as health, happiness, great relationships, inner peace, travel, car, clothes, homes, a sense of abundance, a sense of freedom and so on. List everything you can think of...think big and without limitations.

2. In what situations in my life, and with whom, am I not perfectly happy?

Write down every element that makes you unhappy, dissatisfied, or stressed in any way. Get nitpicky. Identifying the unsatisfactory situations is the first step to resolving them.

3. In looking over my life, where and when have I been the happiest? Where was I, with whom was I, and what was I doing?

These are valuable "clues" as to what brings you happiness and joy.

Bringing Your Happiness to Life

Once you've discovered your happiness ingredients from the questions above, you'll likely want to take action. Before jumping in to the "how" of achieving this happiness, let yourself imagine just how good living this kind of life would feel. Before you know it, you'll be inspired to take some action. This type of "inspired action" will yield greater results than hurried, haphazard actions. So, take some time, do some exploration, and let the inspiration move you!
