Personal
note
from Shawn
Hello,
This
summer seems to be going by so
quickly! As is this year. And when
I think about it, all of life goes
quickly. A couple of nights ago,
I caught part of a program called
My Generation: the music of the
60's on the local PBS station.
Listening to the music was so much
fun, dancing around joyful...and
then there was the shock of seeing
the singers and musicians 40 years
older! Yikes!
If
the past forty years have seemed
to go so quickly, it's likely the next twenty,
thirty, forty years will, too.
Life is really so precious! Much
too precious to "waste" spinning
around in a frenzy of stress and
busy-ness. On the last Attraction
in Action class, most of us agreed
we felt overwhelmed and overly
stressed. That's no way to
savor this gift of life, is it?
What are some ways that will help
you savor your precious life?
With
blessings of joy,
Shawn
Making Friends with your Stress
Stress happens. It's
supposed to! It helps us get
things done. Hans Selye, the
noted physician who became
an expert in the field of stress,
said, "Without stress,
there would be no life." In
other words, life without any
stress would be BORING! On
the other hand, probably all
of us have experienced the
meltdowns involved with experiencing
unmanageable amounts of stress.
The trick is to find your own
unique "perfect" balance
between good stress and distress,
making friends with your stress.
Think of playing a guitar
or violin...if the tension
on the string is too much or
too little, beautiful music
can't be made. The same
is true with human beings.
(You've met those folks
who are "tightly wound?" Or
those who are "slackers?")
Here are some tips to befriend
your stress.
- Recognize
that some stress is desirable. Think
of a project you're
excited about doing...that
excitement is some of the "good
stress" (eustress)
that keeps you motivated
and working well.
- Get
to know yourself better. Recognize if you have specific
triggers that increase
your stress. Become familiar
with your unique stress "picture" - at
what point do you leave
eustress and hit distress?
What are your warning signs
that you are getting to
the upper ranges of positive
stress? Know yourself well
enough to know when you've
reached your stress limit
and have gone into the "danger
zone." Remember that
everyone is different;
honor what's true
for you.
- Don't
believe everything you
think. Believing everything
you think can make you
crazy - or at least add
to your stress. When you
judge yourself, you really
are making matters worse.
Don't let the "I
should be able to handle
this" or "I
can't
deal with all of this" add
to your stress level. Take
your stress level "temperature" and
honestly evaluate where
you are and what you need.
- Know
what works for you to "let
off steam" and regain
your balance. Find several
simple tools that work
for you, particularly ones
that you can use any time,
to keep in your "toolkit".
Focusing on how you want
to feel (pivoting) and
physical activities, in
particular, can be immensely
helpful.
- Give
yourself permission to
take some time to regain
your balance - and
then take the time. Know
that working in the "danger
zone" is hazardous.
You're no longer
at your best, so you won't
be as effective and mistakes
are more likely to happen,
causing even more stress!
Do yourself and everyone
else a favor: take a little
break and use your above-mentioned
toolkit.
By using these tips, you
are making friends with who
you are and how you work.
You are developing a rewarding
relationship, one in which
the best of you shines through.
Befriend your stress and
let it support you in a positive
way.
