Personal
note
from Shawn
Hi
friend,
So, we've been home almost
a week now. Seems like I've
had some odd readjustment to my
concept of time...I keep having
to check what day it is and I haven't
been able to sleep past 3 a.m.!
This morning I woke at 3:50 and
was relieved I'd slept that
long! On the bright side (since
I'm big on choosing the positives
right now), getting up that early
the house is quiet and I have lots
of prayer and reflection time!
Even Peyton and Bella are still
snoozing!
This week's article
is about a very powerful aspect
of living - our ability to
choose. To make choices that serve
us, that empower us, it's
helpful to be clear of some of
the negative self-talk I wrote
about in the last newsletter. My "Spring
Cleaning for Heart and Soul" class
on Saturday, April 26th might be
something to consider!
And
speaking about choices, these
photos from the start and finish
of my climb up Croagh Patrick
in County Mayo (where St. Patrick
fasted for 40 days before casting
out all the snakes in Ireland)
tell a part of the story of
my experience of making choices.
To climb or not to climb. To
keep going step by step or
give in to my whiny "give
up" voice (and trust me,
I got very whiny - after
all, it's too cold, too windy, too
rainy, too steep, not what I planned
for, etc.). How do I really want
to show up in my life? Hmm...
Peace
and love and blessings,
Shawn
Choices
Choices.
Grape Nuts or Total? Red shirt
or blue? Speed up through that
yellow light or brake...hard?
Conscious choosing
We've
got a gazillion choices to make
every day, many that we aren't
even aware of, many that we may
not recognize as choices. (Did
you know that gazillion is listed
in wikipedia? Looking it up was
a choice I made! It's included
under indefinite and fictitious
numbers. FYI) We human beings are
such amazing creatures and, as
we know, we use such a small fraction
of what we've
been given to work with! One of
the most amazing and powerful aspects
of living is this matter of choice
and free will. Being conscious
of our ability to choose can make
a huge difference in our lives.
For the last couple of years, I
have been really fascinated by
choice and the power and possibility
available to us in our choices.
Maybe, in part, because most of
my earlier life I felt like I had
few choices, that I was a "victim" of
my circumstances, never realizing
I had options - maybe there
were unpleasant consequences, but
avoiding those unpleasant consequences
WAS a choice, they were options.
Making
tough choices
It's
not always easy to make some of
the "harder" choices.
(duh!) Those darn consequences!
But if we can be making more conscious
choices as we go along, I think
we aren't faced with as many
of the really tough ones down the
line. A dear friend of mine is
currently dealing with the consequences
of avoiding the harder decisions/taking
the "easy" road, and
it's incredibly painful.
For several years, he's not
wanted (chosen) to be completely
open with his family about their
financial situation and has seen
them spend, spend, spend. Now they
are close to losing everything,
and he's still avoiding the
uncomfortable conversation with
his wife (and she with him, of
course). There are always choices!!
Practice
As we go through our days, let's make our choices more
consciously, allowing ourselves
the opportunity to ask: will this
choice bring me closer to who and
where I want to be? Sometimes,
we'll make choices that aren't
in alignment with who we want to
be (I probably won't always
forgo chocolate!), but as we make
more conscious choices, we take
more responsibility for our outcomes.
Exciting!
Here's a link to
an interesting
video clip (about
18 minutes) from a neuroanatomist
discussing a life-changing experience
that gave her a new perspective
on choice. Enjoy!
